#CalgaryKind

A kind, creative
placemaking movement.

CivicWorks created the #CalgaryKind Community Art Campaign to connect essential businesses with the local arts community and champion equity and inclusion during, and after, an extraordinary period of physical distancing.

Public art has significant economic and social impacts; it tells the story of place, improves business viability, attracts neighbourhood investment, and enriches our relationships with each other and our city.

The first series of murals were developed in partnership with Calgary Co-op and local artist Nicole Wolf. Each mural reflects the surrounding communities of Co-op's newest Calgary location. The artist connected with Community Associations and chatted with resident historians to get a sense of what makes these inner-city communities unique.

Residents of Erlton commented on the abundance of rabbits and those in Mission shared the importance of architecture and the community's francophone roots. Each character depicted in the murals was inspired by a current or historic resident of the area, reflecting the true nature of each community.

These #CalgaryKind murals transform underutilized urban spaces in the inner-city that become symbols of community pride, stimulate civic dialogue, and remind us that we're all in this together — just a little farther apart.
